Flexibility and Scalability

In the traditional industrial environment, because of the restrictions

affecting RS-232/422/485, serial devices had to be controlled or

monitored by a nearby host PC; integration then had to be performed

between the host PCs. This excessive dispersal of data made it difficult

to perform data integration. Today, with the introduction of the Ethernet

Data Gateway family, the user can simultaneously control and monitor

many different types of remote and nearby serial devices using just one

PC. Not only does this save on costs, it also makes it easy to make

decisions rapidly. For example, each PC running Windows NT can control

up to 255 real COM ports, and each COM port can be connected to

many different serial devices, thereby increasing the benefits to the

company.

The Ethernet Data Gateway family immediately upgrades your existing

devices for the Ethernet. It’s no longer necessary to change your S/W

and H/W. Therefore, Ethernet Data Gateway family is not only protecting

your current hardware investment but also ensuring future network

expandability. Unlike traditional multi-port slot boards, the standalone

Advantech Ethernet Data Gateway family operates independently on the

local area network (LAN). It does not require a PC host’s slot, IRQ or

memory resources. There is no longer the need to keep and maintain

an extra PC for added serial devices or upgraded performance. When

additional devices are required, the standalone Advantech Slim Server

solutions attach to the Ethernet network, saving you time and money by
